The cold and flu season has hit us pretty hard. I'm experiencing cold symptoms for the second or third time this season and I'm looking for some relief. My medical professional friends scoff, but could some of these remedies actually work?

1. Put Vicks on your feet-My grandmother slathered it on our chests when we were kids; maybe it works on feet too.

2. Consuming hot chilis-Hot chili peppers contain capsaicin, the element that makes them spicy. Could it act as a decongestant to help clear a stuffy nose?

3. Wearing cold, wet, socks to bed-put on a pair of cold, wet, cotton socks before layering a pair of natural wool socks on top. Could it be the vessels in your feet will constrict as your feet cool down, which sends all the good nutrients into your organs and tissues?

4. Salt gargle-my grandmother swore by this one too. The Mayo clinic, along with others, have attested to the fact that gargling a little salt water could be beneficial for loosening mucus and reducing swelling. A teaspoon of salt in a cupful of water, then  a quick gargle, holding the liquid in your throat, is all that's required.

5. Steam your face-again, Gram suggested this one too. Add boiling water to a bowl and rest your head above it, so the steam goes all over your face. Covering your head and the bowl with a towel will create a mini steamy sauna and will help get the maximum benefit from this little trick. I add essential oils to the water.
