Fergie's performance of the "Star-Spangled Banner" Sunday night at the NBA All Star Game will be talked about for years. And not in a good way. If you haven't heard the performance, take a listen:

I'm a big believer in singing the "Star-Spangled Banner" without vocal gymnastics regardless of how great a singer you are. Stay on key, hit the high notes, be patriotic, let the crowd cheer at the end and you'll be fine. When the Mariah Carey type vocal gymnastics start, that's when I start rolling my eyes. It's just not necessary even when it's good.

Fergie's performance was not good. It wasn't Roseanne Barr horrible, it didn't work. It was just off. That makes it almost worse than if it was just bad. She was capable of turning in a perfectly straight version of the song, but added in her vocal flourishes that made it sound odd. According to TMZ she was attempting to do a slowed down jazzy take on the song, that even she now admits to the gossip site didn't work.
